How are stem cells used in regenerative medicine?

Stem cells are used in regenerative medicine in three broad ways: as research tools for studying disease, as platforms for drug discovery and testing, and as direct therapeutic agents in cellular therapies designed to restore lost or damaged biological function.

As research tools, patient-derived stem cells, particularly iPSCs, allow scientists to grow disease-relevant cell types in the laboratory, creating models that more accurately reflect human biology than animal models do. As drug discovery platforms, these cell models can be used to screen potential therapeutic compounds for efficacy and toxicity before clinical trials, improving the predictive accuracy of preclinical research. And as therapeutic agents, stem cell-derived cells can be transplanted into patients to replace those that disease has destroyed; the most ambitious and potentially transformative application.
