What is regenerative cellular therapy?

Regenerative cellular therapy is a category of medical treatment that uses living cells (typically derived from stem cells) to repair or replace cells, tissues, or organs that have been lost or damaged by disease, injury, or ageing. It is a subcategory of regenerative medicine, distinguished by its focus on delivering therapeutic benefit through the transplantation or engraftment of functional cells rather than through drugs or devices.

Regenerative cellular therapy represents one of the most ambitious frontiers in modern medicine, because it aims to restore the body’s own biological function rather than simply compensating for its loss. For conditions characterized by the irreversible loss of a specific cell type, such as the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in Type 1 diabetes, cellular therapy offers a pathway to restoration that no drug-based treatment can provide.

RMS is developing a regenerative cellular therapy for diabetes based on iPSC-derived Islet-Like Clusters. The therapy is designed to transplant functional, insulin-producing ILC cells into patients, restoring the pancreatic beta cell function that diabetes has destroyed.
